Reproductive Surgery

Dr. Ong has undertaken intensive microsurgical training in a dedicated reproductive unit in the United Kingdom (Assisted Conception Unit, Sheffield) under internationally recognised reproductive surgeons (Professor W Ledger and Professor TC Li) and concentrates solely in the area of reproductive medicine and infertility.

While the thought of surgery can be frightening, it’s an integral part of reproductive medicine and infertility and can improve the success rate of IVF treatment or in some cases provide a complete alternative.

Conditions affecting the success rates of IVF include:

  • Diseases of the fallopian tubes such as hydrosalpinx (fluid in the fallopian tube)
  • Diseases in the uterine cavity such as polyps, intrauterine adhesions and fibroids can decrease the chance of the embryo implanting

Surgery can improve your chance of spontaneous conception in the following conditions:

  • Reversal of sterilisation
  • Fallopian tubal disease
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids

Areas of particular interest to Dr Ong:

  • Microsurgical tubal re-anastomoses
  • Conservative surgical treatment of fibroids (my Master of Medicine treatise)
  • Tubal disease such hydrosalpinx, pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
  • Endometriosis
  • Hysteroscopic removal of uterine adhesions and uterine anomalies such as septum and fibroids
  • Hysteroscopic tubal recannulation to unblocked tubes
