The first step in starting fertility treatment is to make an appointment to see Dr Ong. This can be done prior to obtaining a referral from your doctor.
In order to be eligible for a Medicare rebate, it is important to ensure that your referral is current. A referral from a GP lasts for 12 months or longer, while a referral from a specialist lasts for 3 months.
You and your partner should be present during the appointment as it is not infrequent that the cause for sub-fertility is a combination of male and female factors. During the consultation, a detailed history and examination will be performed. If indicated, a 2 dimensional (2D) and 3dimensional (3D) ultrasound will be undertaken to evaluate your pelvic organs.
Dr Ong will then organise specific tests appropriate for your situation. You will be advised of the most suitable treatment options. You will then be given time to consider how you wish to proceed.
Once you’ve decided to go ahead with treatment, the next step is to meet with our Monash IVF nurse co-ordinator. The nurse co-ordinator will explain in detail to you what to expect, what needs to be done and what your treatment involves. There will also be a financial interview where a careful explanation of the costs involved in your treatment such as Medicare, safety net rebates and out of pocket expenses.
Call our clinic on day one of your period. You will be advised when to come in for blood tests and an ultrasound. If it is an IVF or ICSI cycle, the duration of treatment is no more than 3 weeks.
